It’s an unfortunate proposition for any person. Your name is very important, but when you share the name with someone famous, your life gets a lot more difficulty. If you’re a real-life Harry Potter or a non-Canadian Justin Bieber, having a Facebook account is kind of a dicey proposition, just ask Selena Gomez. The teenager from New Mexico is not the Disney singer, doesn’t really look like the Disney singer, and makes it painfully clear on her Facebook that she is not the Disney singer, yet she found herself banned from Facebook anyway as a false account. A girl named Selena Gomez was banned from Facebook just for sharing the sane name as the Disney pop starlet.
“‘I AM NOT AN IMPOSTOR … My name is not hers on my page,” writes Selena Miranda Gomez, an 18-year-old from New Mexico. “In fact, I even put my middle name on my FB to clear up any confusion. I did not have one single famous friend. I did not refer to myself as [the famous Selena], and I did not have any pictures of her on my page!”
For the time being, Selena Miranda Gomez is still banned from Facebook, which is struggling to shut down an estimated 83 million duplicate and false accounts. Here’s hoping she gets her account back; I imagine Facebook is a very important thing for teenagers these days and since she’s out of contact, it might be tough.
