One of the most enduring monsters in movie history isn’t Dracula or Frankenstein. He’s not European or American in any sense of the word! Godzilla is a beloved movie icon around the world, thanks to the many many classic Toho movies starring a guy in a rubber suit stepping on model buildings and smashing model airplanes. Notice I said Toho movies, not the Sony Americanizations of Godzilla. Well, someone is going back to the well. Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures are teaming up to reboot Godzilla; the new Godzilla will be released on May16, 2014 and, oh yeah, it’s going to be in 3D. Meanwhile poor, awesome Ultraman can’t get a break.
Here’s a snippet of the press release: Toho Co., Ltd.’s Godzilla franchise contains one of the most widely recognized movie monsters worldwide, including more than 25 films, multiple television programs, video games and book series. Legendary, which has been developing the project, and its partner Warner Bros. will return the character to its epic roots with a gritty, realistic actioner.
Considering Warner and Legendary want a gritty, realistic actioner, they’ve got the right team. Director Gareth Edwards knows his way around special effects, as his film Monsters can attest to. Meanwhile, the gritty and action can be easily be provided by screenwriters David The Expendables Series Callaham and David S. The Dark Knight Trilogy Goyer, along with newcomer Max Borenstein. I’m not sure how gritty and realistic can work with the iconic version of Godzilla we all know and love, but I’m willing to give it a shot and hope it’s not a Cloverfield rip-off.
