The revolving door of reality television judges doesn’t just affect American Idol, oh no. After three seasons of The Voice back to back, it turns out the artists in residence would like to do a little more than coach. I guess that’s why they’re musician coaches, not coaches who sing. Blake Shelton has been complaining about the show’s choice to do back-to-back seasons in a row, which gives him no time to tour or record, but he and Adam Levine are sticking around through season 4. Grammy winner Cee Lo Green and Super Bowl National Anthem singer Christina Aguilera are not, however; Cee Lo and Xtina are taking a hiatus from The Voice for season 4.
Don’t worry, those rotating chairs are going to be filled by some competent folks. Namely, Shakira and Usher! Blake is definitely in until season 4, and Adam… well, who knows what he’s up to? Maybe he can be on TV and still record albums and appear on American Horror Story.
“We are thrilled to welcome Usher and Shakira to The Voice,” said a statement from NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt. “The addition of these popular iconic artists continues the tradition established by Christina, Cee Lo, Adam and Blake. Doing two back-to-back cycles of this show requires a tremendous amount of time, and we are happy to accommodate the commitments made by Christina and Cee Lo.”
As for Cee Lo and Christina, Aguilera will be recording and touring behind her new album Lotus, and Cee Lo will be working on new music and writing a scripted comedy about his life. I have no doubt that, should they want to return to the show, that they will be welcomed back with open arms and opened checkbooks by NBC Universal.
