Call me crazy, but Adam Sandler as animated Dracula? I’m not crazy about the set-up, but I like a lot of things about the animated comedy Hotel Transylvania, and apparently I’m not the only one. While I have not seen the film, everyone else in the country apparently did. Hotel Transylvania broke the box office record for highest September debut, with a staggering $43 million dollars in the US over the weekend.
The film features a variety of celebrity voices, from Adam Sandler as Dracula to Kevin James, Selena Gomez, Andy Samberg, CeeLo Green, David Spade, Steve Buscemi, Molly Shannon, and more, all of whom are playing takes on classic Universal monsters and other fun horror movie characters who are drawn to a luxury hotel in Transylvania to let their hair, bandages, or whatever down and have fun without human interference (until a human shows up by mistake). The film is the feature debut from Genndy Tartakovsky, who previously played with mad scientist horror and comedy themes on the brilliant Dexter’s Laboratory.
Sony Pictures also had the second-highest grosser this weekend, with the R-rated sci-fi action flick Looper. Transy was Sony’s 8th number one picture of the year, and it brings the company’s box office totals to a scene-stealing $1,284.7 million dollars for the year, otherwise known as $1.284 BILLION dollars.
