When it comes to quarterback play, it’s very difficult to compare the star passers of the 50’s and 60’s to the star passers of today. The NFL these days is a much more wide-open league, with faster, bigger players and an emphasis on the pass not seen since the glory days of the West Coast Offense. Still, there’s one measure that counts: consistency. Drew Brees has individual season passing records, team point scoring records, and now, he’s officially the most consistently excellent quarterback in history. During last night’s comeback win versus the San Diego Chargers, Drew Brees broke Johnny Unitas’s consecutive games with a touchdown pass record.
Johnny U threw for touchdowns in 47 straight games, which was unheard of at the time and remained one of the few passing records quarterbacks couldn’t challenge until Brees came along. Good day or bad, Brees is good for at least one touchdown, and it’s a streak that shows no signs of breaking any time soon. Take, for example, last night. The Saints were awful, but Brees still threw touchdown passes to Devery Henderson (who caught the record-breaker) and Marques Colston (his franchise record 52nd touchdown catch as a Saint). Eventually, he had his team back in the game and when the final horn sounded, the Saints had bested the Chargers.
