It’s a huge coup for Oprah Winfrey and her struggling OWN cable television network: an interview with the most controversial athlete in recent memory. Everyone’s talking about Lance Armstrong, and it’s got nothing to do with his Tour de France titles or his hundreds of milions of dollars raised for cancer research. It’s all about his Oprah interview, and he did not disappoint. Lance Armstrong admitted to Oprah that he spent a career cheating on the professional cycling circuit.
Part of the reason why so many, myself included, believed in Armstrong was his vehemence at protecting his reputation (and his hundreds of negative drug tests going back for decades). That was all part of Armstrong’s attempts to control the story, get out in front of any allegations and direct the narrative, as well as saving his reputation with sponsons. Now that he’s given up the fight, he can admit that.
Said Armstrong, “If I didn’t like what somebody said…I tried to control that and said that’s a lie; they’re liars. Now the story is so bad and so toxic, and a lot of it is true.”
