For the first half, Super Bowl XLVII was shaping up to be another disappointment. Baltimore scored a touchdown on their opening drive and kept adding to their lead. By halftime, the score was 21-6 Baltimore, and the Ravens were looking to add to their lead. Ray Lewis was playing well, Joe Flacco was showing off the form that would eventually make him the MVP of the game, and the San Francisco 49ers looked out of sorts. While the Baltimore Ravens would end up beating the San Francisco 49ers 43-31, the game would definitely get interesting.
After a halftime performance of Beyonce Knowles reuniting with her Destiny’s Child band mates, in the third quarter something happened to the lights. They went out for 3/4ths of the New Orleans Superdome, knocking out everything from the ads around the stadium to the commentator’s booth and press box. The power was out for an impressive 34 minutes, and the game was suspended while Superdome officials scrambled to get the lights back on and power restored. That gave the 49ers the chance to get their heads together and mount a comeback that nearly won them the game. Key word: nearly. The Niners closed from 22 points back, but just couldn’t get over the hump and get the win.
So, Joe Flacco is the MVP, Ray Lewis is retired, and John Harbaugh won the Har-bowl over his brother Jim.
