Both in terms of her years at the top of British politics, her political beliefs, and her controversial stature among her people, Margaret Thatcher is the British version of Ronald Reagan. Equal parts lionized and demonized by all sides of British politics, it seems that no one lacks an opinion on the so-called Iron Lady. Like Ronald Reagan, she has suffered in recent years from dementia and ill health, and now her time on earth is over and her period as a lightning rod begins. Margaret Thatcher has died at age 87.
I’ll confess a weak knowledge of British politics, and I don’t know what Thatcher did to earn the ire of so many and the love of so many others. However, I will say that pretty much every memorable politician, from John Kennedy to Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill, ends up being hated and loved during their life and into their death. It’s only in the long run, a hundred years from now, when we’ll figure out what Thatcher’s true impact was. That’s someone’s legacy, not the immediate response on the news of their death.
