Troubled child star Amanda Bynes seemed like she had made the transition into adulthood, or at least young adulthood, but the days of her charm and humor are long gone, replaced by someone who frequently gets arrested and who may or may not be having a mental breakdown.  Bynes was seen by witnesses sitting in the driveway of a Thousand Oaks, California, home, lighting fires with gasoline.  Her dog was reportedly burned in the incident, and she had lit her own pants on fire before bystanders intervened.  Amanda Bynes is being held in a California mental hospital on a 5150 hold.  A 5150, or the Welfare and Institutions Code, is an involuntary stay at a mental health facility for evaluation.

Andrew Liverpool, an eyewitness to the event,  told reporters he saw “this girl lying down here with her left pant leg on fire and there is this gas can right here and it is trailing fire.”  The girl told him she was okay once he put out the fire on her pants leg.  As others came to help, Bynes left the scene and tried to get into a cab on the next block, but Liverpool stopped her escape.  He added, “When I look at her… it is Amanda Bynes.”

If Bynes proves to be dangerous to herself and others, she can be held for up to 14 days without judicial approval or any agreement on her part.  I’m pretty sure that after this stunt, she’ll be hanging around the booby hatch for the full two weeks.  Here’s hoping she get the help she obviously needs.
