If having a thigh gap means you edit out your anus, count me out.
When it comes to digitally editing photos, less is usually more. Unless you’re trying to make deliberately weird pictures, the more you mess with a picture the worse it becomes. That’s why Photoshop has become such a bane to the existence of teenagers ever. Not only does it promote illogical standards of beauty, it also makes the companies that use it look bad if they get too crazy with the editing wand. That’s why Target is on the defensive this morning. Already kind of known for some weird fat-shaming in their product names, the company is doing a quick backpedal after some badly Photoshopped thigh and arm gaps were discovered by The Ethical Adman.
The images are comical. Huge gaps in the legs, chunks of the actual product eliminated in an effort to make an already thin teenage girl look even thinner, arms shaved down to pencils… I’m surprised they left her head intact on her body. I’m well aware that every ad ever has been Photoshopped, and that even normal people tinker with their photos these days, but man, there’s a difference between wiping out a few pimples or a scar and making vast chunks of body disappear.
Target has already issued a bland apology: “This was an unfortunate error on our part and we apologize. We have removed the image from our website.”
