It’s both a celebration of television and an early predictor for the Oscars. Every year, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association kicks off the awards frenzy in a shower of fancy dress, alcohol, and statues. It’s one of the more interesting award shows, because it’s one of the most laid-back awards shows, and in recent years, they have picked great hosts. Last night was the 2015 edition of the Golden Globes, and the results were pretty special, all things considered. It’s a new dawn for streaming, continued dominance for cable, and a comeback for Michael Keaton. Here’s a complete list of the 2015 Golden Globes winners and nominees.
One of the most notable things about last night’s Golden Globes were just how dominant nontraditional media was. Netflix, Amazon, cable networks, and the upstart CW network made great hay in the television categories, with Amazon picking up best comedy for its series Transparent and best actor for Transparent’s Jeffrey Tambor. Gina Rodriguez won best comedy actress for the CW’s Jane the Virgin, and the TV drama categories were dominated by Showtime’s The Affair (best drama and best actress in a drama for Ruth Wilson) and Kevin Spacey picked up another statue for his role on Netflix’s House of Cards. Aside from James Spader and The Good Wife, no network shows or stars were nominated.
Perhaps next year they’ll just give all the nominations and awards to cable and streaming television, and do the TV side of the globes via webcast.
