If you missed it last night, the Not Ready For Prime Time Players were brought back together for an incredible 3 and a half hour prime-time special. Red carpet interviews, celebrity guests, all manner of special guests, all in celebration of America’s long-running late-night comedy show. Lorne Michaels was there to take a well-deserved bow alongside the most famous Saturday Night Live alumni. Here are some of the highlights of SNL’s 40th anniversary special from last night.
For me, the highlights weren’t the clips, which I’ve seen a million times, or the special guest performance from Kanye West. It was seeing Dan Ackroyd doing the Bass-o-Matic with Laraine Newman there to chug a gross gray smoothie. It was seeing Ed Norton as Stefon and Emma Stone as Rosanne Roseannadanna. It was seeing Bill Murray and Paul Schaffer singing a love song to Jaws. It was the above, Jane Curtin back on the Weekend Update desk.
For every disastrous appearance by Eddie Murphy or a sick-looking Chevy Chase, there was another SNL alum reminding us why the show is a cultural phenomenon. For at least one night, it was great to see the old faces and the new favorites back together, celebrating our favorite, and not so favorite, comedy moments.
