Gawker, the famous gossip blog, loves to take down public figures. After all, Gawker took down a congressman and routinely . Hulk Hogan, former WCW and WWF champion, is definitely a public figure. However, some aspects of a celebrity’s life should more than likely be off-limits. When Gawker published a sex tape featuring Hogan with the wife of Florida radio personality Bubba the Love Sponge (AKA Todd Clem), they ran with it. Unfortunately for Gawker, a jury has decided that Hulk Hogan is a public figure, but Terry Bollea isn’t. Hulk Hogan AKA Terry Bollea has won a $115 million dollar lawsuit against Gawker Media.
The lawsuit breaks down to $55 million for economic damages and $60 million in emotional distress. After all, it’s not every day your former friend tapes you having sex with his wife and then “someone” leaks it to a website who publishes it all over the Internet for the world to see. Gawker Media, along with founder Nick Denton and then-editor of Gawker AJ Daulerio, may also face punitive damages. The jury voted unanimously to award Terry Bollea his damages and then some. The jury in Pinellas County, Florida, will meet again on Monday.
“We’re exceptionally happy with the verdict,” said Hogan’s legal team. “We think it represents a statement as to the public’s disgust with the invasion of privacy disguised as journalism. The verdict says no more.”
