The Hollywood Foreign Press Association spoke as if its members were near tears Monday when it announced that “The 65th Annual Golden Globe Awards” would be cancelled. The ceremony, originally slated for January 13th, will now be held as a press conference instead of a red carpet event. All of the awards recipients will be announced during an hour-long broadcast on NBC. The HFPA rejoiced at the news that this would take place on the same night as the event would have had the Writers Guild of America strike not gotten in the way.
During the announcement, Jorge Camara, President of the HFPA, said that they were all “very disappointed” for the viewers at home who will be deprived of seeing the event in its traditional form. Correct me if I’m wrong, but as a rabid television viewer myself, I’d sacrifice one night of glitz, glamour and shiny envelopes (and the weeks worth of Best-and-Worst-Dressed lists that follow) for the continuation of quality programming any day.
If the WGA members and all its supporters felt it necessary to refuse to participate in anything related to the Golden Globes, then so be it. And if their demonstration of solidarity can sway even one member of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, then the sacrifice is well worth it. Especially if I don’t have to hear Joan Rivers’ voice until next year.
