Today, a whole new meaning is tied to the phrase, “let’s go fly a kite.” Instead of a toy enjoyed by kids everywhere, a 462 ft. cargo ship is leaving Germany today — with a parachute-shaped kite as its means of power.
The MS Beluga’s owners, in collaboration with Sky Sail inventor Stephen Wrage, will try to prove that modern steel ships can harness wind power and reduce their dependency on diesel engines.
Wrage believes the 160 square meter kite, flying 600 feet above the ship by means of a single cable, will help reduce carbon emissions and diesel consumption up to 20 percent. An even bigger kite could result in fuel savings up to 35 percent. Although Wrage hopes that his new invention will bring a revolution to the commercial ship industry, time will certainly tell.
“Only the tough conditions imposed on a ship during a long voyage of this kind can show whether the SkySail is effective and whether the materials used in the kite can stand up to the stresses and strains.”
