It’s been many years since I’ve seen a good flame war break out, but this one is making up for lost time. The Church of
Crazy Tom Cruise Scientology tried to put a $5000 bounty on members belonging to Anonymous, the online hacker group. After all, their latest project against scientology describes everyone from across the Internet banding “together for a fight that transcends our differences and takes us to a level beyond our individual selves.”
The hackers are using every channel necessary to attack the loony cult.
From packet flooding directed at their servers, to faxing endless amounts of black paper to their machines, these guys are pulling out all the stops. The Internet is shaping up to be Public Enemy #1 as far as L. Ron Hubbard’s establishment is concerned. Videos and websites spread the message to try and discredit an already wavering “belief.”
Gawker, for example, is about to get sued for posting a video showing Tom Cruise weirding out a camera while talking about the topic. Amidst stammering and wide-eyed confessions, he opens his heart about peace, culture, and car accidents.
With that post having been seen over 2 million times, just on Gawker’s site, it’s easy to understand why scientology is so scared to let the strange video stand. After all, the sketchiness of the organization works against whatever they’re trying to achieve. Let’s hope the hackers bring home a victory.
