Tree houses have come a long way since the days of hammering plywood together in my backyard. Some people may consider themselves lucky just to get a few pieces of wood in place so they don’t end up falling out of a tree and breaking a bone or two. However, some architects out there specialize in tree houses. They’re able to bring a touch of professionalism that ranks up there with full blown homes!
The Swiss Family Robinson can’t hold a candle to these 10 tree houses from around the world that are sustainable and fully-functional habitats.
Some are incredible adaptions of the “traditional” tree house. Others bring a completely new spin on the term. For example, these Free Spirit Spheres are hung from trees with ropes and webbing. These are literally the mobile homes of tree houses. Coated in fiberglass, the spheres are waterproof too.
If the idea of hanging from a limb doesn’t settle on your nerves, try scoping out Joel “Bubba” Smith’s amazing skills. His tree houses include bathrooms, fireplaces (does that scare anybody else but me?) and even second stories. Sound fancy? That’s nothing compared to his first tree house which weighed in at 1,000 square feet and featured central air and heating. I know what you’re thinking: The cost must be astronomical. Well, most people willing to get a home in the trees that elaborate can probably afford the $300,000+ price tag.
For the rest of us, we’ll stick to creating them the old fashioned way. There’s a video below for your viewing pleasure showing a stop-motion building process of a tree house from start to finish.
