The buzz around 300-mastermind Zack Snyder’s next project is huge. Too bad it’s release is a year away.
Snyder’s film adaptation of Alan Moore’s renowned 12-issue comic book series The Watchmen (1986-87) will be released March 6, 2009. But that doesn’t mean the hype can’t start growing now!
Movie news site First Showing has published promotional photographs for official costumes of five Watchmen main characters: Silk Spectre, Nite Owl, Ozymandias, Rorschach and The Comedian.
And the fans are going buck wild. This is the first glimpse at what the film and its alternate 1985 reality are going to look like and how artist Dave Gibbons’ creations were brought to life.
Comic book fans take this project very seriously (as they should) since Watchmen is essentially a cornerstone of the genre. Watchmen was one of the first comic book series to popularize the graphic novel format. It was also featured on Time Magazine‘s list of “The 100 Best English-Language Novels 1923-Present” (2005).
This project has been a long time coming what with all the superhero and comic book films that have been released over the last 15 years or so (Batman, Superman, Spiderman–basically all the “-man”s). However, knowing we waited all this time so someone exactly like Zack Snyder could take the helm (instead of, say, Jerry Bruckheimer) makes it all worth it. Perhaps with a politically-charged project like this, Snyder will finally earn some well-deserved respect from institutions like the Academy.
