I can just picture it now. The stereotypical ragamuffin on the street corner hawking the latest edition shouts “Extra! Extra! Read all about it.” while selling this story about a house built out of newspapers in East London.
Cyprus-born artist Sumer Erek put together the art installation which was on display in Gillette Square for two days in March. He used 60,000 rolled-up newspapers, a few timbers and a lot of cable ties to create the house which made a statement about public waste.
Over short periods of time, tons of free newspapers are left for readers in the London subway system and then abandoned and trashed. Metronet Rail, which maintains the famous Underground, donated to the project and urged riders to recycle. Individual citizens and businesses also contributed their daily reads to the project.
The reclaimed papers were tightly rolled and then stacked within the timber framework.
