There are all kinds of strange detritus that litters the oceans of the planet on which we live. Both above the surface and below the surface, many unusual things exist on our oceans that at one time or another were useful developments. Take, for example, the sea forts commissioned by Great Britain to defend their island at various points in history. Most of them are rubble at this point, but one of them is home to one of the most fascinating and complex stories ever told.
It started out life in 1942 as the HM Fort Roughs, an anti-aircraft defense position, but it is better known as the world’s smallest micronation, the Principality of Sealand. For a tiny speck of artificial land that may or may not be a sovereign nation, Sealand has quite a complicated and fascinating history, complete with military coups, helicopter assaults, and war against the British crown in addition to more standard fare like failed business deals.
So much drama over such a small fort! You think with so many other abandoned sea forts there’d be plenty of room for all the pirate radio stations and data hubs in the world, but I guess not.
