Although this post is being categorized under our “Unusual Stuff” banner, the habit of releasing new music for free has certainly become anything but unusual for Nine Inch Nail’s mastermind and frontman Trent Reznor.
The group released yet another full-length album yesterday for free download off of their official website. The album, titled The Slip, was the fruit of a highly anticipated two-week wait after the album’s first single “Discipline” was released to radio at the end of April.
Fans were able to download the track immediately after hearing about it (for free, of course), which was less than 24 hours after Reznor and his team had finished the mastering. And contained within that download was a message saying, “Go to www.nin.com on May 5.”
The fans who did were treated to quite a brilliant surprise when they figured out that Trent’s big news was a brand new, non-instrumental album as a follow-up to March’s Ghosts.
It seems the only thing Trent Reznor wants his fans to have to pay for is the tickets to go see him play these lovely and free songs live. Tickets to the NIN summer tour go on sale later this week.
