What do you get when you cross the animated Disney classic Dumbo with the movie Trainspotting? Well, probably something like the story of Xiguang (Chinese for Big Brother), an Asian elephant who was addicted to heroin. How in the world does an elephant get hooked on smack?Well, first of all, it would take a lot of smack, even to get a young, 4-year-old bull elephant hooked. On the tropical island of Hainan, the unfortunate Xiguang was captured by drug traffickers in 2005 and fed heroin-laced bananas to control him. It took methadone therapy (with doses five times that safe for human use) and three long years for the giant to get clean, but now he’s off the junk, happy, and living in a wildlife park.Asian elephants are an endangered species. Their ivory tusks make them a tempting target for poachers. Here’s hoping that Xiguang can turn his happy ending even happier by finding a nice girlephant, wooing her with his tale of woe, and making with the cute baby elephants.
