Human beings can do a lot of things out of necessity. For example, let’s take a gander at the Chand Baori, a famous well from India. Yes, that’s the well above… the crazy thing with the thousands of stairs. Actually, it has 3,500 stairs, is 13 stories, and is 30 meters deep. It was built back in the 9th Century, which makes it an amazing feat of engineering. Check out the full image gallery at Oddity Central.
The whole thing makes me think of the famous M.C. Escher print Relativity, but that water looks pretty gross. I imagine nobody uses the Chand Baori for drinking purposes these days, but it couldn’t hurt to drop a chlorine bomb in there every once in awhile. I’d imagine there are a lot of freaky fish in those murky waters.
