As The Dark Knight continues to rake in the money at the box office (over $500 million in the US and $950 million worldwide), it’s clear now that superheroes and their evil counterparts will never fade away.  There will always be a market for costumed do-gooders and maniacs, but it’s not always on the silver screen.  There have been plenty of real-life vigilantes even crazier than Batman, and lots of real-life criminals who could rival the Joker for both insanity and dangerousness.

There are some great people on this list.  Papa Doc Duvalier is really one of the crazier dictators in history, and his son Baby Doc carried on his madness in true super villain tradition, but the lack of Charles Manson on the list makes it feel a little hollow.  I know he’s a pretty obvious choice, but he’s definitely worthy of inclusion given the way he managed his sick little family.

I like a lot of the choices on the vigilante list, too, but certainly Bernie Goetz, New York’s famed Subway Vigilante, was worth of inclusion despite his lack of staying power.  I mean, he was like a real-life Charles Bronson!  And the Guardian Angels are pretty famous, too.  Maybe they just need cooler costumes if they want to make it to the movies.
