I was never a cat person. I was always a dog guy. I wanted a pet that was fun and that was always happy to seem me. Cats were usually too aloof for my tastes. Little did I know that cats were a source of high comedy, like this video from Neatorama. I learned quickly once I got a kitten of my own.
When I was in college, one summer I took some summer classes. Given that I live in the South and because I was living in the newest dormitory on campus, there were no trees for shade, just parked cars. I was the only person driving a full-sized van, so my vehicle provided the most shade.
One day, as I’m walking out to my van to get my stuff for class, a little gray fuzzball pops out from beneath the shade of the van and rubs herself against my leg, purring and hungry. I pet her a little bit, give her some water, and go on about my business. I figured she had a momma cat somewhere nearby and she was just hanging out. But she wasn’t. I kept seeing her again and again, and she kept getting skinnier and skinnier. She was just so sweet I couldn’t leave her out there knowing that she’d die, so me and my then-roommates blatantly broke college rules and ushered the little kitten into our dorm room, where she stayed for a good three months.
Aside from being very malnourished, she was otherwise healthy, and today, I have a sweet, fat cat named Toonces. Fortunately for me, I didn’t end up adopting Bitey.
