Today is an unusual day. It’s an event called National PARK(ing) Day. It’s a bit difficult to explain, but I’ll give it a shot. Basically, you stick a quarter or two into the parking meter of your choice, roll out a piece of Astroturf or carpet, and set up your lawnchair and umbrella and relax. It is described at the National PARK(ing) Day website as “a one-day, global event centered in San Francisco where artists, activists, and citizens collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spots into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public parks.”
MAKEzine posted a great video of just what PARK(ing) Day is all about, which I’ll also share for those who are interested in making a statement (or at least interested in grilling out in the street). I wouldn’t recommend doing this in a crowded downtown area; that’s probably a great way to get beaten up by some road-raging commuter without a hovercar. Still, it’s a fun idea!
