Since I said goodbye to the much less historic RCA Dome, I’d be remiss if I didn’t say goodbye to the big ballpark in the Bronx, Yankee Stadium. Built in 1923, Yankee Stadium has seen a ton of history. As such, there are lots of neat things that happened there. Mental Floss has singled out 10 facts about Yankee Stadium that you did not know.
My favorite is the fact that Monument Yard used to be part of left field and in play. Unsurprisingly, only Alex Rodriguez and the late Thurman Munson have been able to mash the leather covered spheroid that far. Cool Buzz also passes along a great tribute to Yankee Stadium in the form of Sean Kenney’s Lego model.
I’ll always be a little bit sad that, in spite of having Yankee-fan friends across the river in New Jersey, I never got up north to see a ballgame in the old Yankee stomping grounds amongst the bleacher creatures.
