While the Chinese astronauts on board the Shenzhou VII are currently in flight towards the stars, in Calais, France, another intrepid adventurer has pushed back risking death for another day. Yves Rossy, a professional pilot for SwissAir by day and a daredevil by night, has invented something he calls a Jet Wing. Basically, it’s a little wing with jets on it that you strap onto your back and direct by using your head and back to steer it. Rossy had planned on leaping out of an airplane over Calais, unfurl his carbon wings, and then fly across the English Channel before hopefully landing in Dover. Unfortunately, due to bad weather, he’ll be trying his insane stunt tomorrow instead.
When announcing his cancellation, Rossy told assembled reporters, “I only have one life.” That’s very true. It kind of makes me wonder why you’re risking your life to fly your homemade jetpack at 125 miles an hour across 22 miles of bad water! You’re already the first person to build and fly a jet-powered wing! What more do you want?!
It must be a lot of fun to be completely insane.
