One of the biggest icons in film history, Paul Newman, passed away last night at age 83. You can read a great article about his life (with a lot of amazing pictures) here, or look at the press release issued by the Newman’s Own Foundation here. Either way, the world is missing a giant of a man.
Looking back over his career at the IMDB, I had quite frankly forgotten how many good movies Paul Newman had been in. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Hud, Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, Slap Shot (one of my favorite movies ever), The Hudsucker Proxy, and Road to Perdition are just some of his many career highlights. He’d been nominated for an incredible 10 Oscars, won once, and recieved two honorary awards for his charitable work. His Newman’s Own line of food products has generated over $250 million dollars in funds for various charities, and he was one of the founders of the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp for seriously ill children. He was a constant crusader for civil rights and for protection of the environment. He was an avid car-racing fan and participant. Most impressively of all, he was married to the same woman for over 50 years.
As an actor and a humanitarian, Paul Newman was second to none. In the course of his 83 years on Earth, he touched the lives of billions of people through his movies and good works, and he will definitely be missed. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.
