She was married to a comedy legend in Carl Reiner, and her son Rob Reiner is a comedy legend in his own right, but neither of them have had the pop culture impact that the late actress/singer Estelle Reiner had thanks to one line in a single movie. Estelle was the woman in the diner in the film When Harry Met Sally who, upon listening to Meg Ryan fake an orgasm, turned to the wait staff and said the immortal line, “I’ll have what she’s having.” She won’t be having that anymore, as she passed away today at age 94
You kind of hate summing up a person’s career in one line, but when it’s one of the most significant moments in pop culture in the last 20 years, it’s hard not to talk about it at length. Still, Estelle had memorable bit parts in other movies by her husband and son, as well as the late Anne Bancroft, and she had a flourishing career as a jazz singer. Not too shabby for a girl from the Bronx, huh?
It could always be a lot worse as far as singing careers go.
