There is nothing cuter than a little baby animal. If that animal is a rare pygmy hippo, a very endangered species whose homelands in West Africa are torn by constant warfare, that little cuddly baby is even more special. Monifa, the newest baby hippo born at the Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia, is doubly special. This cute little baby girl is the first pygmy hippo to be born at the zoo in 23 years, and she survived a near-fatal breech birth to make it. The Telegraph has some absolutely adorable video footage of Monifa, which you’ll see below.
Isn’t she just the cutest little baby critter ever? If you still need more proof of her cuteness, the Sydney Morning Herald has an image gallery of her here. She’s going to be a media sensation (and I kind of want a pet pygmy hippo).
Interestingly enough, the most famous pygmy hippo is Billy, who started life as the pet of President Calvin Coolidge but gained fame as a stud-hippo, fathering 23 hippos and providing the bloodline for most of the pygmy hippos in American zoos today. No doubt he’d be a proud hippo pop amus to have a baby as sweet as Monifa!
