The notorious pinup girl Bettie Page had lived enough in one life for two or three normal lives. The legendary pinup queen has been a figure of controversy and redemption throughout her life. Something of an empty vessel, Page’s life and legacy is one in which everyone can find something of meaning. She passed away due to complications from a heart attack yesterday at age 85.
Who else could go from being one of the first Playmates of the Month and hanging out with Hugh Hefner to being a Christian missionary in Africa and working for Rev. Billy Graham? Some saw her pictures as playful and fun, but others thought they were immoral and tried to have them banned. She lived as a recluse for many years, but at the same time was an idol to thousands of men and women everywhere and the forerunner to the sexual revolution of the 60’s.
From the CNN article: “She captured the imagination of a generation of men and women with her free spirit and unabashed sensuality,” said agent Mark Roesler in a written statement. “She is the embodiment of beauty.”
I wholeheartedly recommend anyone who hasn’t seen it go check out The Notorious Bettie Page whenever you can. It’s a brilliant biographical picture about one of the most controversial women of her time, directed by the brilliant Mary Harron and featuring an incredible performance by Gretchen Mol. Bettie was an amazing woman with a truly incredible life story.
