One of the funniest things about movies might be the fictional products that stock store shelves and fill character pockets. For example, if you’re a smoker and you need a cancer stick to scare off the nicotine fit, you might get a pack of Nails (Kevin Smith’s View Askewniverse), an offer of a Morely (Heroes, The X-Files, Platoon, Buffy The Vampire Slayer), or a puff off a pack of Red Apples (Quentin Tarantino’s films), depending on what film or television world you inhabit. There’s more about the interesting history of fictional products at Mental Floss. I recommend everyone go check that link, so that way you never fly on Oceanic Airlines or buy anything made by Acme.
For some reason, movies are much more successful at creating fake brands and excellent fake commercials (or movie trailers) than they are at replicating sports stars. For example, the fake commercials in the work of Paul Verhoeven are consistently awesome, from the OCP ads in Robocop’s dystopia to the public service announcements in Starship Troopers. There are also a ton of excellent fake movie trailers in the films Tropic Thunder and Grindhouse which are as good or better than the movies they’re in (and I liked both movies a lot).
Hollywood might not be much for making real products these days, but they can still churn out some awesome phony products!
