Like most nerds, I was shamelessly interested in all things Japanese, from their cartoons to their professional wrestling, in high school. When I went to college, I took my interest one step further and roomed with Japanese exchange students for three years. It was really interesting. They were good guys and taught me a lot about their country, and I helped them work on their English skills. I always told my old roommate I’d come stay with him, as he lived in the suburbs of Tokyo, but he went back to Japan and I lost touch with him. It’s a shame, because Tokyo is a beautiful city, as this image gallery shows.
Could I still go to Tokyo? Yeah, I’m sure I could. But I’d have no one to help show me around, no one to translate for me, no one to hang out with, and no one to keep me from falling into the pit of flour on some crazy Japanese game show. It’s hard to be a stranger in a strange land, and there aren’t many places stranger than Japan.
