I mentioned Michael Jackson earlier today in passing. I needed an excuse to link to something back in PopFi’s massive archives and him using his fortune to buy all the Beatles music seemed appropriate given that I was talking about eccentric, wealthy weirdos. I mean any story about rich and weird has to mention Michael Jackson, right? Yes, but unfortunately for Mikey he’s not rich anymore. That’s why he’s selling basically everything he owns at auction. The best part is ANYONE can bid on a piece of MJ’s history, because Julien’s Auctions has the whole thing online!
So what’s MJ selling? Well, the New York Times has a list of what’s on the block, but I’ll sum it up as best I can: lots of glittery military-style clothing, lots of bronze statues of children, paintings and figurines of Michael cavorting with Disney characters, and lots of things that no normal person would ever want in their house or closet (except as a conversation piece). Think of the weirdest thing you can involving Michael Jackson and it’s probably being sold.
The auction is expected to raise $15-20 million dollars and has been divided into eight massive sessions. You could spend hours in the online catalogue of auctionable goodies. However, most of the stuff up for sale is surprisingly cheap. We’re talking under $1000! Michael Jackson’s life is priced to move, so if you ever wanted a piece of Neverland now’s your chance!
