We’ve all seen videos of baseball managers who flip out, start screaming and kicking dirt and throwing bases, and eventually the umpires will toss them out. They’re a favorite baseball moment of mine, because it’s always very funny when the props come out to play. However, we see those all the time, so there’s nothing really unusual about them. But this weekend, something unusual happened. The managers and players were all fine; it was the crowd that got thrown out of the game!
Umpire Don Briggs decided that he’d had enough of the unruly fans, so the crowd of 100 people got tossed en masse during the game between Winfield-Mount Union and West Burlington. How fans got too unruly at a high school baseball game I’ll never know. Maybe Winfield-Mount Union and West Burlington are bitter rivals or something. Maybe someone threw something at the umpire when he made a bad call.
That reminds me of one of my favorite baseball meltdowns of all time, the one thrown by Joe Mikulik, manager of the Class A Ashville Tourists. Check it out; it gets really good towards the end when the dirt mountain and water bottle come into play.
