Call it the one that got away. Everyone has that first car that they love more than any other car. Maybe it’s a Little Tikes Cozy Coupe. For others, it’s the car they bought when they were 16, restored to drivable condition, and then had to sell or lost for some reason or another. Papa John’s Pizza founder John Schnatter’s first car, a 1971 Camaro, had a sad fate; John sold the car to save the family business. That was 1983. Today, he’s been reunited with that gorgeous car.
The amusing thing is the car never left the state of Kentucky, where I am and where Papa John’s corporate headquarters is. In fact, it had only passed through two sets of owners since it was sold by John! Of course, the car has undergone renovations and has become a dragster (with a roll cage and a souped-up engine), but the car is now John’s. When you have Papa John’s millions, though, $250,000 is nothing when it comes to getting back your baby.
