Captain Lou Albano, one of the most gifted managers to ever pick up a microphone in the world of professional wrestling, passed away today at age 76. He’d been struggling with his health ever since a heart attack a few years ago, and was in hospice care at the time of his expiration. He leaves behind a legacy that’s hard to match, as he was one of wrestling’s first cross-over success stores as part of the Rock ‘n’ Wrestling angle with Cyndi Lauper and as Mario on the Super Mario Brothers Super Show.
In a business well known for its larger-than-life characters, Captain Lou Albano was one of the largest, literally and figuratively. From his big voice and loud shirts to his wild mane of hair, signature beard, and omnipresent rubber bands, Lou was a real character on-screen and one of the most popular managers and wrestlers in the industry. He could get anyone booed, just by showing up at their side. The man was an incredible mouthpiece for many years. Just check out this 1984 interview and tell me that this guy couldn’t cut a promo.
