Most Americans think of the autobahn as a sort of anything goes high speed race, like NASCAR but with normal cars, but it’s not like that at all. There are a whole lot of offenses on the autobahn that can earn a driver a citation, and the road is heavily policed. That’s why the high-speed freeway is one of the safest roads to drive on in the world. However, the speed does make it harder to slow down drivers and easier to rack up violations, as one Italian man found out when he racked up 15 traffic violations in 11 minutes on the Swiss version of the autobahn.
I’d love to try my hand at autobahn-style driving, but Americans aren’t generally able to indulge our inner speed demon due to A) too many slow cars and slow people on the road, B) too many bad drivers on the road, and C) lots of traffic-prone areas. It’s just a shame a place like New Mexico or Kansas can’t just go autobahn-style to make the most use out of the long, flat, semi-deserted stretches of roadway there.
