If you’ll remember, a few weeks ago I mentioned a Facebook competitor called From Beyond 2 U, which the creators dubbed “a Facebook for the dead.” Well, in an attempt to head off the competition, the actual Facebook has announced plans to create its own Facebook memorial pages, complete with a separate look and features, for actual Facebook members who pass away.
It has to be requested by friends and/or family of the deceased, and Facebook says the pages will look differently than standard Facebook pages. The contact information will be removed, no one will be able to log in and edit or change the page, and only the deceased preexisting friends would be able to find the page, but it would still be there. In theory, it’s a good idea.
The question is, how will people determine who is dead and who just hasn’t logged into Facebook for awhile? Will there be requirements, like a death certificate, or will people randomly just be able to declare folks dead and roll their page over into a memorial page?
