There’s one thing that’s fun about slot machines. You put money into them, lights flash and bells ring, and if you’re lucky, you’re a winner and money clinks noisily into the winnings slot. Most of the time, you don’t get anything but the lights and noise, but Bill Seebeck hit the jackpot. Literally and figuratively. Not only did he win money, he won $166 million dollars. However, the casino cried, “Machine malfunctioned!” and refused to pay him anything.
On one hand, the casino has a point. The machine’s top jackpot was only $90,000. Perhaps foolishly, they weren’t going to give him that, either, until he threatened to get a lawyer on his side. Casinos aren’t suckers, and wisely, they found a way to reach an agreement with Mr. Seebeck to keep both sides out of court.
I’d imagine the settlement falls somewhere between $166 million and $90,000.
