The Large Hadron Collider, once thought to have the power to destroy the world, isn’t turning out to be much of a threat. After all, in order to destroy the world, the machine has to actually be active and functioning, and apparently the scientists at CERN can’t keep the thing together and running properly. First there was a coolant leak that destroyed massive sections of the device back in September and now, well, birds happened. Specifically, a bird dropped a piece of bread into some of the external machinery that runs the LHC, and it broke the thing.
Seriously, a piece of bread got dropped onto the works and whole sections of the vast, billion-dollar piece of equipment I could never possibly understand broke down almost instantly. Amazing. That must have been some pretty fearsome loaf of rye to throw such a spanner in the wheels of science.
