The Berlin Wall fell 20 years ago, yet the land of Russia remains a mysterious and strange place to most Americans. I mean, we all hear about the funny stereotypical drunk Russian stories, and we’ve seen a couple of weird statues from there, but there’s a whole other world to Russia that remains underrepresented. For example, take a look at Russia’s Seven Wonders and tell me you’re not interested in seeing at least some of them. For example, the above statue, The Motherland Calls.
Dedicated on October 15, 1967, The Motherland Calls is one of several gigantic “Mother Motherland” statues built by Russia’s communist leadership to memorialize the Russian people’s sacrifices during World War II. The above statue also happens to be one of the largest pieces of statuary in the world, standing at a staggering 280 feet (85 meters) high from the tip of her sword to the base on which she stands. Another stunning example of Russian craftsmanship, isn’t it?
