The holiday travel season is fast approaching, and fortunately there’s someone looking out for the little guy. That would be the big guy. Google, the Internet search giant, is doing a little public good this winter by providing free high-speed wireless Internet access at 47 airports nationwide! Check to see if your local airport (or the airport of your destination) is a participating partner by heading over to Google’s Free Holiday Wifi website.
Here’s what I don’t understand: why do airports charge you for wifi in the first place? They’re already catering to a captive audience, who they force to pay $5 for a bag of peanuts and $8.50 for a slice of lousy pizza, so why further add to the price gouging with costly hourly wifi fees? No, I will not accept, “Because they can!” as a legitimate answer. People are already grumpy and irritated by the whole process of air travel, so why not sacrifice a little cash for a little positive customer goodwill? Let travelers kill a little time by playing Pokemon or something.
Some people are already getting the hint. Google competitor Yahoo! is giving out free Wifi at Times Square in New York City for the next year. In addition, the airports in Seattle, Washington, and Burbank, California, are providing free wifi indefinitely. It’s only a matter of time before free wireless internet in airports is the rule, not the exception. Hopefully, you’re not allergic to wifi!
