It’s not often that a professional football player feels the need to apologize for his on-field behavior when he does something smart, but Maurice Jones-Drew isn’t your ordinary football player. Generally listed at 5’6, MoJo is a human pinball on the field, using his 200-pound bulk to run through and bounce off tacklers, making him a dynamo during the games and a sought-after player in fantasy football. During a game Sunday against the New York Jets, with his team up by one with 1:48 left in the game, Drew took a knee on the Jets’ 10-yard-line, denying himself a touchdown, but allowing his team, the Jacksonville Jaguars, to run out the clock, kick a field goal, and win the game. For this smart play, he apologized.

In fantasy football, you assemble a roster of players from the real world and are rewarded for their performance with points. If MJD up there scores that touchdown rather than takes the knee, he adds six points to his total for the weekend. By taking that knee, he denied his owners (himself included) of a crucial score. By doing what was best for his team, he harmed his fantasy ownership. It’s refreshing to see a football player apologize for doing the smart thing, rather than a dumb thing.
