Accidents happen, but who is responsible for those accidents? When Shane Reese, a 12-year-old kid at Intermediate School 219 in the Bronx, New York, took a soccer ball to the face during an impromptu dodgeball game involving over 100 students, he got hurt. It’s not surprising, considering soccer balls are much harder than those soft red rubber playground balls. Shane wasn’t even involved in the game, given that he’d recently had dental surgery to repair some teeth lost in a car wreck. When the ball hit Shane’s new grill, those new teeth broke.
Pretty much any injury on school grounds is troublesome for school officials, so they offered Shane and his family an immediate $20,000 settlement to make up for the injury. Of course, given that dodgeball is discouraged these days, school officials used the wrong kind of ball, and they had entirely too many students playing at once, they’re just trying to cover their own behinds from the inevitable lawsuit. They probably won’t regret not taking the money.
