Ready to end it all, a 30-year-old Romanian man traveled to the Gulf of Corinth in Greece. As he leapt from the cliffs to take his plunge into the Mediterranean sea, some 262 feet below him, he ran into a problem. His backpack kept snagging on the cliffs, slowing his fall. This meddlesome backpack ended up saving his life, as the local coast guard was able to pluck him out of the water before he could drown.
This isn’t the first time we’ve had someone’s life get saved by a handy personal use device, but this is the first time that someone has saved himself accidentally. Why didn’t he just take his backpack off before his attempted death plunge? I don’t know. Seems like a good question to me.
After all, you can’t take it with you. Well, I guess in this case you can, but it will also keep you from successfully ending your life, so maybe it’s best not to take it with you.
