Rom Houben was given up for dead.  After a horrific car crash in 1983, he sank into a coma.  Since then, every time he’s been administered the Glasgow Coma Scale, he’s been graded as brain-dead.  However, that wasn’t the case.  Rom Houben was awake in his coma for 23 years, completely paralyzed but totally conscious.  The man everyone assumed was a vegetable was trapped in his own body the entire time, and every expert save one was wrong.

It’s only within the last 3 years that anyone has realized that Rom is actually present and accounted for in his own body, and it took high-tech brain scans conducted by Dr. Steven Laureys at the University of Liege to reveal the truth.  Since then, Rom has recovered the ability to type out messages on a computer and even read books.  It’s an amazing recovery!
