In the words of 55-year-old Vietnamese man Le Van, “I’m a person that does things differently. I’m not like normal people.” When you consider that Le Van missed his wife so much he dug her up from the grave and slept beside her corpse for five years because he wanted to hug her, not being like a normal person is a given. The shocking part of this story isn’t that he did this, it’s just how many other things he tried to be with his deceased wife before going to this extreme.
When she first died in 2003, he slept on top of her grave, but stopped this after 20 months because he was afraid the rain and cold would get him sick. His next plan was to dig a tunnel into her grave so he could crawl into the tunnel and sleep on top of her coffin, but his seven children weren’t going to let him get way with that. So, in November 2004, he dug her up and took her home with him. He molded clay around the body, dressed it in clothes, and put it out on the bed so he could snuggle and snooze with it.
On one hand, you have to feel for the guy losing his wife like this. On the other hand, digging up a body so you can sleep with it/beside it is really creepy. I guess the clay helped keep the dead body rotting smell from permeating the room (or Le just didn’t care).
