What happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas. For example, if you’re Terrance Watanabe, the only thing that stays in Las Vegas is your money. After running up a staggering $127 million dollars in gambling losses in just a year, he’s taking Caesar’s Palace and parent company Harrah’s Entertainment to court in an attempt to recoup some of his losses. He says that casino staff plied him with booze and pain medication to keep him spending at the tables, and as such, they’re liable under state laws that govern gambling while intoxicated.
In 2007, Watanabe’s losses accounted for 5.6% of all of Harrah’s Las Vegas profits. One guy made spent that much money! Now he’s suing Harrah’s and the state of Nevada is putting Watanabe up on charges. He’s repaid $112 million of his debts, but thanks to the $14.7 million he still owes the casino, he’s facing 28 years in jail because of his attempts to steal from and defraud the casino.
This is why I don’t gamble.
